Verse 5-6-7
Food is the basic necessity of life. It provides the nutrients and energy our bodies need to function. Food powers our bodies, enabling us to move, think, and perform daily activities. It is the raw material for physical growth, it helps builds and repairs damaged cells and develops strong immune systems.
Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba taught us "Ceiling on desires," when it comes to food, refers to the practice of limiting one's consumption and desires. Swami encourages a mindful and responsible approach to food consumption while emphasizing the importance of respecting resources and finding contentment in simplicity.
In our Hindu scriptures, Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 17 Lord Krishna emphasizes the connection between food and one's mind and character. It suggests that food choices can influence our mental states and that conscious eating, focusing on the quality and preparation of food. can lead to greater spiritual well-being. Specifically, the Gita categorizes food into three modes: sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic, (SRT Food). each affecting the individual's nature
The Gita also emphasizes the importance of eating with gratitude and mindfulness, suggesting that approaching food with respect can enhance digestion and mental satisfaction
"Satvic food" in one's diet, which is vegetarian and free from items like onions and garlic. There is a need for our minds to be pure and serene when consuming food. We should offer our freshly cooked food to God in prayer, transforming it into prasad (consecrated offering), which further purify the food and the mind.
BG 3.13: The spiritually-minded, who eat food that is first offered in sacrifice, are released from all kinds of sin. Others, who cook food for their own
The food we eat impacts our mental state, so it's importance of choosing foods that promote a calm and peaceful mind. Food nourishes your physical body, and scuttle part of food nourishes the "prana" - the Mind
From a practical perspective, we should look at food in terms of quality of the food, quantity of the food we consume, how often do we consume food per day. How do we consume our, in what manner we eat our food and what is the attributes of our food?
What is the state of mind when we prepare our food? What are we eating? How we are eating? How can we be more control about out food? When it comes to our food supplies and the procurements of your food do we look for Organic, Non-GMO, Farmers market, garden vegetables, Locally Produced with little or ono perscides or herbicide?
Our food prepared is also critically important, we should never prepare food with anger or negativity, as these emotions can imprint on the food and negatively affect the individual.
The Gita highlights the importance of balance in eating, recommending a diet that nourishes the body and mind without being excessive. In terms of quality, we should eat 2 or 3 meals per day while sitting. Remember, a yogi eats 1 time per day, a bhogi eats 2 times per day, and a rogi eats more than 2 times per day. For each meal we consume, our stomach should be 1/2 full with food, and 1/4 fill with liquid like soup or water, while we leave 1/4 of our stomach empty so that it will help our stomach to churn the food in our our digestive system.
When we consume our food, user or sensec- touch, smell, taste and sight of it
