Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 17, Verse 15

अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् |
स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते || 15||

anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ cha yat
svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ chaiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa uchyate

anudvega-karamnot causing distressvākyamwordssatyamtruthfulpriya- hitambeneficialchaandyatwhichsvādhyāya-abhyasanamrecitation of the Vedic scripturescha evaas well asvāṅ-mayamof speechtapaḥausterityuchyateare declared as

BG 17.15: Words that do not cause distress, are truthful, inoffensive, and beneficial, as well as regular recitation of the Vedic scriptures—these are declared as austerity of speech.

Hitam (what you say must be beneficial)

Mityam (speech must be measured, not going on and on and on)

Austerity of speech is speaking words that are truthful, unoffending, pleasing, and beneficial for the listener



ability to connect, persuade, and inspire.

share ideas, build relationships, and influence the world around them

good and evil, capable of uniting people or inciting conflict. 


is it necessary for me to speak?

will my words be honored here?

I will not say anything hurtful, 


intenstion not to insite
